Bio-Art, Ethics, and Engagement (2013-2014)

September 8, 2018September 12, 2018admin

Scientists, policy makers, and social theorists acknowledge a current crisis in the public understanding of science, with significant consequences for policy and practice. This project analyses innovative approaches to science communication and engagement at the Waag Society, Amsterdam, and contextualizes these approaches within the history of science communication strategies, focusing on Bio-Art interventions to improve dialogue amongst all stakeholders and to foster empathy for competing points of view.

Under the supervision of Dr. Manon Parry, and Lucas Evers, Head of Culture Programme and Open Wetlab, Waag, embedded researcher Lucas Evers evaluated this work, to establish the most effective elements of these artistic interventions, and their mechanics of operation. In collaboration with Curator Bart Grob of the Museum Boerhaave, and Agamyxis, a biotech company, the researcher evaluated exhibition approaches for use by medical museums and in health and science communications.

Funded by a €30,000 grant from the Creative Industries Research Centre Amsterdam (CIRCA) at the University of Amsterdam.
